HOW TO CRACK JEE

No doubt, success rate in IIT-JEE is less than 1% . But at the same time I have seen only 1% students in any class who have the following qualities:
  1. 100% attendance
  1. 100% concentration in the class (just like the concentration of a wicketkeeper)
  1. 100% punctuality of time. I suggest all of you to reach in every class at least 5 minutes before starting the class.
  1. Regular revision of class notes and formulae. All class notes and formulae should be on tips. Today’s lecture and all formulae of today’s lecture should come on your tips in your tomorrow’s lecture and you should not forget them till the final exam is over.
  1. No distractions from mobile phones, internet and other age related issues

  • Problems are of four types: logical, illogical, relevant (asked in competitions) and irrelevant. Illogical and irrelevant problems will ruin your concepts, disturb your mood, waste your time and will lower your confidence. Illogical but irrelevant problems will waste your time. So focus only on logical relevant problems.
  • You will find all relevant theory and all important points in the class room teaching of any experienced teacher. So have faith on him and his notes for theory part. Don’t be curious for other concepts at this stage. Try to make those concepts more strong which are taught by your teacher rather then running behind any new irrelevant concepts. For theory part strongly believe in your teacher’s notes. Consult a single book only for problem practice.
  • In my opinion, that faculty is good whose class notes with time (as he/she become more experienced) are converging in nature not diverging. In a room suppose you want to see a bulb then a teacher who is showing you only bulb is best from my point of view rather than a teacher who is showing you fan, AC and other things with the bulb. Same strategy you should follow in your studies.
  • See the interviews of big personalities like toppers of IIT-JEE, Bill Gates, Sunder Pichai etc. And dream to become like them. This keeps you motivating. No matter you achieve that success or not. Because happiness should be our main goal of life and happiness not always comes from professional success. Bhutan is one of the happiest countries in the world, although it is not as successful as US, Japan etc.
  • See the interviews of toppers of IIT-JEE but don’t try to follow their strategy. They are exceptional. They can complete 3–4 books in each subject in two years. For a normal child it is difficult. So in my opinion their strategy is not going to help you. They will suggest names of 2–3 foreign authors books. And I have faith on them they read those books. For a normal child it’s difficult to extract the important points (from JEE point of view) from those books, as they are not written for Indian competitions.
  • Consistency in studies is very important. No matter what’s your capacity of study hours. But whatever is it, it should be consistent. To remain consistent for 2 years, is a little bit difficult task for a normal child. So break theory is a good option. If you love watching movies then in your monthly time table fix movie time at least twice a month (fortnightly). Also fix small gaps in your daily time table. If gaps are preplanned then they help you a lot in focussing your studies in the remaining time.
  • Try to make good friends in schools and coachings who are focussed for IIT-JEE.
  • Fear of failure in the exam is the main hurdle of success. So always believe in Hindu philosophy: Karma kiye jaa fal ki ichcha mat kar ei insaan. Because results are not in your hand. Enjoy the journey. I would rather suggest you to take a next chance also (I am talking about drop year) if unfortunately you can’t crack IIT-JEE in first attempt. Because in real sense IIT-JEE syllabus for a normal child is of three years. You might have seen many civil services aspirants who crack civil services in 2nd or 3rd attempts. If you have prepared for two years then you should not return back from the D. Koshish kar ne walon ki kabhi haar nahi hoti (the famous poem of Haribanshrai Bachchan, very inspiring). In my opinion B Tech from IITs,NITs and some other good institutes is still a good career option in India.
Trust me if you have above five qualities, you have already achieved 50% success. Yet I’m giving you some of the tips:
1. Nowadays more than 99% students are joining coaching classes. So if we compare between two students of same caliber, one who has joined coaching classes will take edge over the other who is not going to coaching classes because in any competition most of the questions are concept based. In coaching classes the expert faculties reduce your learning time. So against my inner will I ask you to join some coaching class (only one time) just after your board examinations of class 10th. Don’t get late in that.
Coaching class has only 10% role in success. 90% depends upon the student. But that 10% is very important. So choice of good coaching institute is the first step towards success. For the choice of coaching Institute I am further dividing the students in two categories:
(i) Student who have above five qualities. For these students given below are the parameters while deciding a good coaching institute:
Experienced and permanent faculties in all three subjects, classes should last till the final exam. After the mains there should be sufficient number of classes for advanced. Interaction hours with the students should be as maximum as possible. Number of students in the institute should be neither too less nor too more. Institute should be at least 5 years old. Actual authentic success rate (in percentage) should be high. Don’t see total number of selections and don’t believe in fake results (results through test series etc). There are many institutes in some cities where thousands of students are in one coaching institute. So their total selections are no doubt more but actual percentage success rate is very less. So I will not recommend such institutes for first category students. Because they need very little help from the coaching Institute. I will not name the institutes but in almost every city there are one or two institutes who qualify the above parameters. So there is no need of going outside your city, as it has too many negative points too.
(ii) Students who lack in first five basic qualities should choose a coaching institute who have above parameters plus some additional features like: some faculties should be dedicated for personal doubts, where the institute monitors the students on daily basis and send their report to parents, where there is a culture of daily assignments. For this category of students their parents will have to work hard. They will have to monitor their kids, their assignments, their attendance etc.
2. After selection of good coaching Institute the choice of right school also plays very important role. No matter which board you have. In my opinion that school is best where there are no extra curricular studies, only good studies. Study hours and days should be as minimum as possible so that student get sufficient time to focus in competitions. Number of unit tests should be negligible. No home work from the school. They should focus only in studies in minimum school timings. Practical portion is also asked in competitions. So regular practicals should be there in the school.Through this forum I would like to request different school Principals to provide their students above facilities in class 11th and 12th.
3. Now comes the strategy:
(i) In class 11th don’t bother for school marks. Focus on competitions. Just manage that you don’t fail in 11th. There is a huge gap in class 10th and 11th (specially for competitions). So if you are seriously preparing for IIT-JEE then your school performance may drop. It’s quite normal. Attend all classes in the school (choice of school I have already given) with full concentration. And try to finish school syllabus in school itself.
In class 12th you need good percentage in boards. So board exams are equally important. From the very first day divide your study hours in the ratio 1:4. Here 1 is for school studies and 4 for competitions. Although in the above type of school you will not face much problem. If you can afford then just after 1st Main in January you can take some additional tuitions for board exams from school teachers only for one month. There are many good teachers who complete whole syllabus of board in just one month.
(ii) Try to take evening batches in coaching. After returning from the school sleep for 1–2 hours. It will increase your efficiency manifold. In whole day you should sleep at least 7–8 hours.
(iii) Make monthly plan (according to your school and coaching time table) of your studies. In Sundays and all holidays your study hours should be double. Hours per day are not important. Consistency in studies, concentration and selection of good and logical problems are most important. From coaching institutes you learn what to read and what to skip. As there are lots of problems in each topic. So selected, quality problems is important. I have given one separate answer in this forum under the article: which book is best for IIT-JEE physics. I would ask you to go through that answer also. There I have covered many more points.
(iv) I personally don’t like too many tests during the course. One quality test after every three weeks is optimum. If there are too many tests in a month then you can’t study as per your normal schedule. You study according to test and do not read the subject in depth. Once your course is complete then you may increase number of tests.
(v) For a normal child (in PCM) I never recommend other exams like Olympiad, KVPY etc. Rather you focus only in one exam.
(vi) In the beginning you will not score good marks in different tests. It’s normal. Make a formula list, concept list and different type of problem list. (Soon I am going to publish a short formula and concept book. I hope it will be very helpful for the students aspiring for different competitions) Keep on revising them several times. I promise you, in last six months before the exams your problem solving skills will dramatically increase. You have to stay in the crease. If you have wickets in your hands then in the last overs you will surely make runs. Your class notes should always be on tips.
(vii) There are 40–60% topics in all three subjects which are simple and you can take selection only from these topics. In Physics those topics are: Gravitation, Heat and thermodynamics, Wave motion, Current electricity, Modern Physics, YDSE, EMI, Magnetics, AC and fluid mechanics (only ideal fluids). So try to make these topics very strong.
(viii) Some of the coaching institutes do not teach all topics. So don’t depend on them. Keep the syllabus before you and complete the left out topics by your own. In physics normally, experimental portion, semiconductors, magnetism, optical instruments and diffraction etc. are not taught in some of the institutes. But they are very important and 10–12% questions (in Mains ) are from these topics. So complete these topics by all means. Mostly questions are simple from these topics.
(ix) In Physics question from the chapter vector is rarely asked (once in 10–15 years) . But this chapter is very important. Vector concept is used at many places in 11th as well as 12th. So your vector part should be very strong. Similarly concepts from initial few chapters of physics like Kinematics, Laws of motion, Work energy power and Centre of mass are also used in many other chapters. So these chapters should also be strong.
(x) If your efficiency (in any field) is high then you can complete a tough task with less efforts and efficiency increases by good management. To increase your efficiency/management skills at this stage I am giving you some of the tips:
(xi) To keep motivated for 2 years (which is difficult for most of the students at this age) I suggest some of the strategies mentioned below:
Note: Students trust me, 90% road accidents are due to our mistake, only in 10% cases is our bad luck. Same is the case here, in 90% cases we fail in any exam due to our wrong strategy or preparing half heartedly only in 10% cases is our bad luck. Sorry to take the wrong example but both conditions were similar that’s why I took this example.
Good Luck Students,
✌✌✌✌
